News · The power path to the rack

Every step toward 800 V DC removes equipment between the power source and the racks. CROSSOVER takes the last step at the generator

AI data centers are moving from 415 V AC distribution to 800 V DC. Each step on that path takes transformers and converters out from between the power source and the racks. CROSSOVER is designed to take the final step: the generator makes 800 V DC itself, so nothing separate stands between the turbine and the racks.

Five power paths to the rack

NVIDIA has set out how data-center power moves from today’s AC distribution to 800 V DC. We drew the same paths and added CROSSOVER. The number on the right counts the separate transformer and AC-to-DC stages between the power source and the racks.

Power paths to the rack. Today, 415 V AC: MV grid, transformer, UPS, PDU and rack power supply, 5 conversion stages. Retrofit, 800 V DC in the white space: MV grid, transformer, UPS, LV rectifier and 800 V DC bus, 4 stages. Hybrid: MV grid or on-site generation, transformer, LV rectifier and 800 V DC bus, 2 stages. MV to 800 V DC: MV grid or on-site generation, MV rectifier or solid-state transformer and 800 V DC bus, 1 stage. CROSSOVER: gas turbine and Hyper Tech DC generator, with 800 V DC at the terminals and rectification built in, feeding isolated 800 V DC buses, 0 separate stages.
Hyper Tech drawing after NVIDIA’s 800 V DC architecture. A stage is a transformer or AC-to-DC step between the source and the rack; DC-to-DC conversion inside the rack is not counted. The CROSSOVER generator still rectifies, inside the machine.
  • Today. Grid power is stepped down to 480 V AC, converted twice in the UPS, stepped down again to 415 V AC and rectified in every rack’s power supply.
  • Retrofit. A rectifier in the white space feeds an 800 V DC bus, but the AC chain upstream stays.
  • Hybrid. The UPS goes; one transformer and one rectifier remain.
  • Medium voltage to 800 V DC. A medium-voltage rectifier or solid-state transformer does the whole conversion in one step.
  • CROSSOVER. The conversion moves into the generator. 800 V DC leaves the machine.

The generator does the conversion

  • On the shaft where the fan was. CROSSOVER is built from existing CFM56 aero engines. Two Hyper Tech generators sit on the engine shaft and are driven directly, with no gearbox.
  • Rectification on the machine. Each generator converts its 600 V AC to 800 V DC itself, so the plant needs no transformers, switchgear or separate rectifiers between the turbine and the racks.
  • Isolated buses. Each generator feeds two isolated 800 V DC buses of about 4 MW, one to each module of GPU racks with battery storage. Isolation is inside the generator, with local fuses and IGBT controls.
  • The same voltage as the racks. Because grid-fed solid-state transformers and CROSSOVER both deliver 800 V DC, a campus could in principle start on on-site generation and add grid-fed conversion when its connection arrives, without changing the racks.

Read with care: Hyper Tech is not affiliated with NVIDIA, and NVIDIA has not evaluated or endorsed CROSSOVER. The architecture paths are drawn from NVIDIA’s published material; the stage counts are Hyper Tech’s. CROSSOVER is a development program; ratings are design targets and the images are concept visualizations.
