News · 800 V DC goes to production

Vantage reserves 1 GW of 800 V DC power converters. Where the grid is years away, 800 V DC can come from the generator

On October 21, data-center developer Vantage and Heron Power Electronics announced that Vantage has secured more than 1 GW of manufacturing capacity for Heron Link, a solid-state transformer that turns medium-voltage grid power directly into 800 V DC for AI racks. It is one of the largest commitments yet to 800 V DC power. It also assumes a grid connection, which for large new sites can take years.

What Vantage and Heron announced

Vantage plans to deploy Heron Link across its hyperscale data-center campuses. Heron, which takes part in NVIDIA’s 800 V DC ecosystem, builds the solid-state transformer with integrated energy storage, replacing the chain of conventional transformers and converters that a 480 V AC data center uses. “Our customers need a faster and more efficient way to deploy increasingly power-dense and flexible AI infrastructure,” said Curtis Aubry, vice president of global product strategy at Vantage.

Vantage lists five gains over 480 V AC designs: faster time to capacity, fewer conversion stages, support for megawatt-class racks, less equipment, floor space and labor, and storage that smooths AI load swings. The companies gave no dollar value or delivery schedule.

800 V DC still needs power to arrive

  • A solid-state transformer starts at the grid. Heron Link converts medium-voltage grid power. A campus still needs its utility connection before the racks can run.
  • That connection is the long wait. Rystad Energy finds US interconnection timelines for large loads have roughly tripled since 2015 and now run three to six years.
  • So developers are building their own power. Rystad models about 40% of projected 2030 US data-center capacity as likely to use dedicated on-site generation, and expects data-center spending on fuel cells alone to grow from about $2.8 billion in 2025 to about $30 billion by 2030.
  • 800 V DC is where racks are heading. NVIDIA has said full-scale production of 800 V DC data centers will begin in 2027, scaling to racks of 1 MW and beyond.

Where CROSSOVER fits

  • 800 V DC at the generator, not at the grid. CROSSOVER is designed to deliver 800 V DC directly from the generator, on multiple isolated buses, so a site needs no medium- and low-voltage transformers, switchgear or separate rectifiers between the gas turbine and the racks.
  • Behind the meter. Natural-gas generation on site avoids waiting for the grid connection, new utility transformers and transmission.
  • Sized for megawatt-class racks. Each 16 MW CROSSOVER unit is designed to feed four isolated 800 V DC buses of about 4 MW, each serving its own group of racks with battery storage and supercapacitors.
  • Built like the racks it serves. CROSSOVER is factory-built on skids from existing aero engines and set up from three 40 ft modules, with a 72-hour install as the engineering target.
  • Same voltage, either source. Because grid-fed solid-state transformers and CROSSOVER both deliver 800 V DC, a campus could in principle start on on-site generation and add grid-fed conversion when its connection arrives, without changing the racks.
  • On the 800 V DC timetable. CROSSOVER targets its first unit and pilot in Q2 2028 and volume production in 2029, as 800 V DC racks move into production.
